A different garden book

Tiny sprouts peeked up like baby dragon toes.
Trying to get a closer look, I stepped off the path
into the dirt—crunch.
I stared at the footprints I’d made.
“Wish there was a line I could see,” I muttered.
Daddy said, “There is. You’ll find it next time.”

Adoption story as ancient myth

Phoros pressed a single seed into the soil.
It drank sunlight and grew fast.
When the bud opened,
the air filled with a sweet, dizzy smell—
like honey and thunder mixed together.
“Whoever tastes it will never be sad,” he boasted.
But he was wrong.
His flower made people
so hungry they forgot everything else.

Composition

Art Song/Duet: „Hope and a Hem.“
Soprano Meghan Guse, mezzo-soprano Gretchen Adams, and pianist James Morehead perform Brian von Rueden’s musical setting of words by Chicago poet Aaron DeLee. The piece is based on the story of the hemorrhaging woman who touches the hem of Jesus’s garment in Luke’s gospel.

Design & Direction

Reimagining classic works (from Shakespeare to Mozart) with intimacy, clarity, and empathy. Visual storytelling through costume and texture.

About BRIAN

I’ve been creating for as long as I can remember—first through music and theatre, now in words. People once told me I should become a pastor. My pulpit turned out to be the arts: directing operas, shaping recitals, and writing stories for children. My project often begins with something small—a news story, a concert, a question that lingers—then grow into a specific form, each step informing the next.

Every project begins
with a question or a shared spark.
